🥒 Kappa — Japan’s Mischievous River Creature
In Japanese folklore, rivers and ponds are said to be home to a strange creature called the Kappa (河童).
Part turtle, part frog, and a little bit human, the Kappa is one of Japan’s most famous yokai — supernatural beings that appear in traditional stories.

So Kappa roughly means “river child.”

- A turtle-like shell on their back
- Webbed hands and feet
- A beak-like mouth
- A bowl-shaped dish on top of their head filled with water
That water dish is the source of the Kappa’s power.
If the water spills, the Kappa becomes weak.

One of the most famous things about Kappa is their love for cucumbers.
People once believed that throwing cucumbers into rivers would appease Kappa and prevent accidents.

Even today, the simple cucumber roll carries the name of this mythical creature.
