The name 柴犬 (Shiba Ken / Shiba Inu) has a few possible meanings.

  • 柴 (Shiba) – brushwood or small shrubs
  • 犬 (Ken / Inu) – dog

Most people believe the name refers to a small dog that hunted in brushy mountain terrain.

The Shiba is actually Japan’s smallest native dog breed, originally developed to hunt small game like birds and rabbits in the mountainous regions of Japan.

Despite their small size, they are incredibly agile and alert.

Japan has six native dog breeds, all recognized as cultural treasures:

  • Shiba Inu
